Cyclones get local commitment from Ames lineman Newell

Iowa State scored a weekend commitment from a very local prospect when Ames (Iowa) offensive lineman Colin Newell pledged to the Cyclones on Saturday.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Newell also had scholarship offers from Miami (Ohio) and Colorado State with ISU representing his only Power 5 offer. Newell talked briefly about his decision in a conversation with CycloneReport.com shortly after he committed on Saturday.

"I knew I was going to do it today," Newell said. "I went over there to watch practice and then I committed after."

Newell is a Rivals.com three-star prospect and projects as an offensive tackle at the next level. He had initially been offered by Iowa State's previous coaching staff and that offer was validated by the new staff when it took over the program. Newell has made several unofficial visits to the ISU campus, both before and after the coaching change.

As a junior, Newell was named second-team all-state in Class 4A by the Iowa Newspaper Association and he was a Class 4A all-state honorable mention selection by the Des Moines Register.
